Booster Club Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete Awards

The Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete Awards are given out at the end of each season (Fall, Winter, Spring) to one outstanding athlete in each sport who embodies leadership and success both athletically and academically.     

Tutta Bella, a Northwest restaurant chain, is dedicated to recognizing high school students who live in the community neighboring its restaurants. Since 2009, Tutta Bella in Issaquah, has committed to support this goal by acknowledging outstanding student athletes and their achievements.  At the end of each sports season, the Booster Club asked the coaches nominating worthy candidates. From these nominations the Booster Board selects and honors one student each of the season sports.  The recipient are given a Tutta Bella gift certificate along with recognition in the Issaquah Reporter, Booster Buzz, IHS enews and the Tutta Bella restaurant.

The following criteria are considered in the award selection*:

• Student is a senior  
• Athlete shows leadership to the team
• Athlete demonstrates good sportsmanship
• Student is in strong academic standing (minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA)
• Student is involved in the IHS Community in addition to their sport

Special Olympics:  The Booster Club is a cheer leader for all our students at Issaquah High School.  including those with intellectual disabilities. A more unique set of criteria is used to evaluate these amazing kiddos.

SPRING 2018-2019 Recipients

 

Mckenna Malone ~ Softball

Congratulations to Mckenna Malone, a senior at Issaquah High School.  She has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Girls Softball coach Ron Hatlen and AD Luke Ande nominated McKenna and write, “Mckenna has been a team captain for the last 2 years and was a 4 year starter on the girls softball team. She is a very good student and leader. She leads by example and is always looking for ways to make her teammates better. She has a smile on her face even on her bad days and the other girls look up to her because of her attitude and effort every day on and off the field.”

McKenna has been on Varsity Softball for 4 years and participated on the swim team at IHS for 2 years.  She is a 4 year Scholar Athlete. McKenna earned recognition as 2019 Kingco Honorable Mention for Outfielder and was a 2 year varsity captain.  She also earned the Staff Recognition Award for Integrity this year.

McKenna is an exemplary scholar athlete with a GPA of 3.52.  She also participates in DECA and ASB at IHS. She has also played on NW select softball teams. McKenna spends time working at kids camps at the community center and will be volunteering in Kenya with the Big Cat Wildlife Research and Conservation project this summer.  She plans to attend Colorado State University in the fall.  Her hard work and dedication have made her a shining example to represent Issaquah High School. Michael Wimmer ~ Baseball 

Congratulations to Michael Wimmer, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Baseball Coach, Rob Reese, nominated Michael and writes, “Michael has been in the baseball program 4 years. He is an outstanding young man with a great work ethic. He is a leader on the team, at school and in the community.”

Michael has excelled all four years participating in sports at Issaquah High.  He played basketball for three years and has been on the Baseball team all 4 years. This season as a pitcher his earned run average was .57, he helped the Issaquah baseball team to a 3rdplace finish at state and he was voted Most Inspirational by his teammates. 

Michael is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 3.9. He is a leader in our community working at Camp SAMBICA where he continues to have an impact in the lives of youth. Michael will be attending the University of Washington this fall. His hard work and dedication have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Michael, and best of luck in the future!

Sayaka Kenmochi ~ Girls Tennis

Congratulations to Sayaka Kenmochi, a senior at Issaquah High School.  She has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Girls tennis coach, and IHS AD Luke Ande, nominated Sayaka and write, “ Sayaka was nominated because she represents herself, her family and school in such an amazing way. She has taken part in different clubs, sports and activities while at Issaquah High and in the community leaving a lasting impact. She did all this while staying focused on her classwork and having an increased role at home.”

Sayaka has been on the tennis team all 4 years at IHS. Earning the role of captain for the Spring 2019 season. She has excelled as a student at IHS as a member of the Japanese club, acting as treasurer and served as secretary in the HOSA club. As well as volunteering at other various community events. She sets an outstanding example of balancing family commitments with school and sports activities.

Sayaka is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 4.0!  She has maintained this gpa while taking an impressive 11 AP courses! Her hard work and dedication have made her a shining example to represent Issaquah High School. Sayaka plans to attend Johns Hopkins University to study neuroscience in the fall. Spencer Berntsen ~ Boys Lacrosse

Congratulations to Spencer Berntsen, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Lacrosse coach, Brandon Fortier, nominated Spencer and writes, “Spencer has been the most improved player and a key piece of our team this season. He is very coachable and brings a great enthusiasm to the field.”

Spencer has excelled all four years participating in both football and lacrosse at Issaquah High.  He has been recognized as a Scholar Athlete all four years. And he earned the Most Improved Player Award this year in lacrosse.

Spencer is an exemplary scholar athlete with a GPA of 3.55. In addition to sports at IHS he also participated in Park and Rec basketball and was also an Issaquah Lacrosse K2 Youth Coach. Spencer will be attending WSU in the fall.  His hard work and dedication have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Spencer, and best of luck in the future!

Nick Germino ~ Track

Congratulations to Nick Germino, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Track Coach, Tracy Silva and her team of coaches nominated Nick and writes, “I have known Nick over the past 2 years as one of his track coaches. During this period he has consistently developed outstanding qualities of character, integrity, concern for others, leadership and perseverance in achieving high levels of academic and athletic performance. Nick relates well with his teammates and peers and is respected for his commitment to excellence and the desire to help others.”

Nick has excelled all four years participating in sports at Issaquah High.  He has been on the Track team all 4 years and on the football team for 3 years.  In addition to sports he also participated in Sports Medicine internship, church leadership and volunteered at both Northwest Harvest and Snoqualmie Food Bank.

Nick is an exemplary scholar athlete with a GPA of 3.25. His hard work and dedication have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Nick, and best of luck in the future!

Dawson Oen ~ Boys Soccer

Congratulations to Dawson Oen, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Boys Soccer Coach, Kyle Tatro, nominated Dawson and writes, “Dawson exemplifies everything we strive to be at Issaquah and in our program. He is a young man of outstanding character. He is a leader on the team, at school and in our community.”

Dawson has excelled all four years participating in soccer at Issaquah High.  He was named Kingco Honorable Mention for the 2018-2019 season.

Dawson is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 4.0 while enrolling in multiple AP courses.  He is also the co-president of the “We Care” club, active in DECA and the Engineering Club at IHSH.  Other community activities include participating on mission trips through Louise Parish, volunteering at the Salvation Army and playing soccer for ISC Gunners.

Dawson's hard work and dedication have helped him earn multiple merit based scholarships as he heads to Gonzaga University in their Honors Program this Fall. His successes have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Dawson, and best of luck in the future!

 

WINTER 2018-2019 Recipients

Brian Yoon ~ Boys Basketball

Congratulations to Brian Yoon, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Boys Basketball coach, Bradley Valentine, nominated Brian and writes, “Brian is a hard working young man. The thing that I value the most in Brian is his fun-loving attitude. He always comes to practice with a smile, then as soon as practice starts his competitive edge and drive kick in. He does an excellent job of leading our team both vocally and leading by example. I look forward to seeing all the great things Brian will go on to achieve in life.

Brain has excelled playing basketball all 4 years at Issaquah.  He has earned the recognition as a Scholar Athlete and was Kingco Honorable Mention for the 2018-1019 season.

Brian is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 3.89. He has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Honors and is a member of the National Honor Society.  Brian has taken many AP classes throughout his high school career.  He has been a soccer coach and referee as well as a volunteer Voice Mentor with over 200 hours of community service. His hard work and dedication have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Brian, and best of luck in the future!

James Adkins ~ Bosy Swim & Dive

Congratulations to James Adkins, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Boys Swim and Dive Coach, Laura Halter, nominated James and writes, “James has been an outstanding athlete and team leader all 4 years swimming at IHS. He is a hard worker and leads by example in and out of the pool. He is always kind and respectful and an excellent example to his teammates in all areas, especially sportsmanship! Serving as captain his senior year he showed great strengths in the areas of organization and communications. He keeps his team laughing with his crazy antics and is well-loved by all his teammates. He will truly be missed next year.”

James has excelled all four years participating in sports at Issaquah High.  He has been on the Swim team all 4 years earning recognition as an Outstanding Scholar Athlete every year, King Co Qualifier all 4 years, and a district qualifier 2018 and 2019. He was team captain for the 2018-2019 season as well as earning the Coach’s Award in 2018. In addition to swim James participated on the tennis team and received many awards including Most Improved and Most Inspirational in 2017 and the Best Teammate Award for the 2018 season.

James is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 3.84 while enrolling in multiple AP courses.  He was the ASB freshman rep and has been a member of National Honors Society since 2016.  Other activities include volunteering at Camp Orkila and training guide dogs for the blind as well as being an active member of the Boy Scouts. His hard work and dedication have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, James, and best of luck in the future!

Caulain Saper ~ Wrestling

Congratulations to Caulain Saper, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Wrestling coach, Kirk Hyatt, nominated Cal and writes, “I selected Cal Saper because of his work ethic and he always goes beyond what is considered to be ‘just ok’.  Each time a task was given he made every effort to do and show all of his peers it was possible.  He set such a high standard for others to follow, he’ll be remembered for years to come. Not only in athletics but in the classroom as well.”Caulain has excelled all four years participating in Wrestling at Issaquah High.  He was a 4 year letterman and a team captain for 2 years. He has been recognized as a Scholar Athlete all four years and received  a two-time interscholastic academic honorable mention at the WIAA state wrestling finals. Cal was ranked 8thin the state in 160 weight class for 2019. He also won the prestigious Academic State Champion Award for 4A 160 weight class.Caulain is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA over a 3.8. In addition to wrestling he played Tenor Sax in the IHS Jazz band for 3 years. He has also achieved Eagle Rank as a Boy Scout and has done volunteer work for the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank and Mountains to Greenway program.  His hard work and dedication have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Cal, and best of luck in the future!

Jasmine Maynard-Zhang ~ Gymnastics

Congratulations to Jasmine Maynard-Zhang, a senior at Issaquah High School.  She has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Girls Gymnastics coach, Ryan Fleisher, nominated Jasmine and writes, “Jasmine has been a committed member of our team and a super hard working athlete, she continues to push herself to learn new things as well as perfecting the skills she has. Jasmine has improved so much, she is the prime example that hard work and dedication pay off. Jasmine has been a great captain this year. She has worked hard to bring the team together and make sure everyone has a voice. She has competed all around in our meets in our Varsity line up. Jasmine is kind, thoughtful and observant.”

Jasmine has been a valued member of the Gymnastics team for the last three years. While a part of the team, she has earned a Scholar Athlete Award in 2017-2018, and she received the Most Improved Player award 2018.

Jasmine is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 3.84.  She received the Perfect Attendance Recognition Award 2018, and World Language Student Recognition Award in 2016. She is also a member of National Honor Society and has spent time volunteering with the YWCA and other organizations in Issaquah.  Her hard work and dedication have made her a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Jasmine, and best of luck in the future!

Luci Stewart ~ Girls Basketball

 

Congratulations to Luci Stewart, a senior at Issaquah High School.  She has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Girls Basketball coach, Jackie Bykonen, nominated Luci, and writes, “Luci is an excellent student, athlete and young lady. She has been a member of the girls’ varsity basketball team since moving to the Issaquah School District her sophomore year. She sets a great example for younger athletes in the program as well as the future high school athletes in our feeder program.  She has an excellent work ethic, positive attitude and is a dedicated student and athlete.”

Luci has excelled the last 3 years while attending Issaquah High.  While participating on the varsity basketball team she has been selected on the first team all Kingco for all three years. She was also team captain for two years.

Luci is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 3.97!  She volunteered in the girls basketball feeder program and also leads activities for her church, and has held a job for most of high school. She will graduate with her associate degree from BC as well as getting her high school diploma.  Her hard work and dedication have made her a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Luci, and best of luck in the future!

Katie Sanders ~ Girls Soccer

Congratulations to Katie Sanders, a senior at Issaquah High School.  She has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Girls Soccer coach, Kyle Tatro, nominated Katie and writes, “Katie is a standout player and leader on the girls’ soccer team, but even more impressive is her commitment to and achievements in the classroom. This year, Katie was one of the captains of the team and showed incredible leadership both on and off the field. She has been instrumental in the continued success of the girls’ soccer program, but has never lost sight of the importance of her academics. Katie is the ideal representative for girls soccer at IHS and truly is the epitome of scholar athlete!”

Katie has excelled all four years playing at Issaquah.  As a sophomore she was IHS Defensive Player of the Year and KingCo Honorable mention. As a junior she helped lead the IHS girls to a State Championship and was again the defensive player of the year.  Katie was chosen as Team Captain for her Senior Season and chosen to wear the honorary #9 jersey which has a storied history at IHS! She was also 1stteam All-KingCo 2018.

Katie is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 4.0!  She has been recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar. Katie also is a part of Eagle Crew and National Honor Society at IHS as well as being a VOICE Mentor. Her hard work and dedication have made her a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.  Congratulations, Katie, and best of luck in the future!

Richard Jia ~ Boys Tennis

Congratulations to Richard Jia, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Boys Tennis Coach, Patrick Nam, nominated Richard and writes, “I’m nominating Richard for the Tutta Bella scholar athlete award for his outstanding service to the boys’ tennis team the past two years I’ve been head coach for the team. Richard has been a model sportsman on and off the court with his demeanor and positivity. Richard has found great success on the tennis court and has not faced defeat often, but he treats wins or losses with the same grace and poise. As a senior captain on the boys team, he has been a model leader to the underclassmen and helped serve them whenever called upon. Richard has always been in good standing in academics or otherwise concerning his eligibility on the team and I never worried he would be out of line any time during the season. While I don’t see him in the classroom, I know he has taken the challenge of suffering throughout a great number of AP classes. Richard sets his sights high and aims to be  a better person every day.”

Richard is truly an outstanding, 4-year varsity tennis player.  He was the Boys Tennis Captain his senior year.  He has participated in the Junior Statesmen of America Club and the Physics Club. As well as volunteering as a tennis coach at the Columbia Athletic Club.

In addition to athletics, Richard is a top student, maintaining an estimated 3.30 GPA, while taking at least 9 AP classes and receiving a distinguished AP Student Award.

Claire Hyun ~ Girls Volleyball

Congratulations to Claire Hyun, a senior at Issaquah High School.  She has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Girls Volleyball coach, Amanda Sewell, nominated Claire and writes, “Claire is a true definition of a student athlete. While she continually excels at the sport she loves, volleyball, she also is dominating in the classroom. Claire is a wonderful teammate who is driven with an amazing work ethic and makes those around her better.”

Claire has been on Varsity volleyball for 3 years and has played club volleyball since 2012. While on varsity at IHS Claire was honorable mention All Kingco League 2018. She has won many awards and championships in her club volleyball as well.  She has received the Big Heart Award for earning over 30 hours of community service in 2016-2018,  and has been a valued volunteer at many local charities for holiday events benefitting families in need. 

Claire is an exemplary scholar athlete with an impressive GPA of 3.9!  Her hard work and dedication have made her a shining example to represent Issaquah High School. Claire has verbally committed to play volleyball for the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. She plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and will earn a U.S. Coast Guard license and an officer’s commission in the U.S. Armed Forces. Katie Riley~Girls Cross Country

Congratulations to Katie Riley, a senior at Issaquah High School.  She has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Cross Country coach, Gwen Robertson, nominated Katie and writes, “Katie is a four-time competitor at the state cross country championships. She earned All-State Honors in 2016, the same year she was on the 4A State Championship Cross Country Team. Her effort helped the team win the title. Katie has also competed on the 1600 relay team at the state track championships. As a senior Katie was voted as team captain by her teammates. She is a quiet leader that cares about all of the girls on the team. Katie is a team player who helps her teammates become the best runners they can be.”

Katie has been on Varsity Cross Country for 4 years and Track for 3 years. She has All-Kingco and All-State honors in Cross country and is team Captain.  Katie is a seven-time scholar athlete with a GPA of 3.89.  In addition to athletics, Katie is a role model in the community, volunteering with the Issaquah Gliders programs, Chicken Soup Brigade, she is also a mentor for Athletes for kids and served as a program aide at the Issaquah Girl Scout Youth Day Camp. Katie was a member of the National Honor Society her Junior year and received an IHS Award of Excellence for Achievement in Language Arts.

Katie is an exemplary scholar athlete.  Her hard work and dedication have made her a shining example to represent Issaquah High School. Katie has signed a letter of intent to study and run cross country and track at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. Congratulations, Katie, and best of luck in the future!

Allen Aby ~ Boys Cross Country

Congratulations to Allen Aby, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Cross Country coach, Gwen Robertson, nominated Allen and writes, “Allen is a remarkable student and athlete. His way of leading others is to always care about everyone and volunteer for the least ‘fun jobs’ in order to inspire others to work together. He sees his leadership role as being a servant to others. His goal is to encourage a culture of encouragement and support within the team. Allen works very hard as an athlete and a student. He loves learning and pushing himself to get better every day.”

Allen has been involved in Cross Country for four years and Track for three years. He is a 3-time state championship qualifier and 4 year scholar athlete and was team captain.

Allen is a is valued community member volunteering at Grand Ridge Elementary, on the Issaquah highlands Youth Advisory Board and coach for PCMS math club as well as a Relay for Life participant.  He also is a link crew leader and national honor society club president as well as a member of the Code Club and Issaquah Aerospace Initiative Club. He is a National AP Scholar and has maintained a GPA of 3.99 while completing 12 AP courses.  

Allen is an exemplary scholar athlete.  His hard work and dedication have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School. Congratulations, Allen, and best of luck in the future!

Alyssa Helgesen ~ Girls Swim & Dive

Congratulations to Alyssa Helgesen, a senior at Issaquah High School.  She has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah’s Girls Swim and Dive coach, Laura Halter, nominated Alyssa and writes, “Alyssa is an excellent leader for her Issy girls swim and dive team. She is extremely organized and keeps everyone well informed. She leads by example in and out of the pool, always giving 100% for the team in her workouts and her performance in competition. She always displays great sportsmanship and is an example to her underclass teammates. She is at all times kind and cheerful, and keeps her teammates laughing with her great sense of humor. Alyssa qualified for state all 4 years swimming in high school and was Captain of the team her senior year.  She will be truly missed next year.”

Alyssa is also a wonderful student, maintaining a GPA of 3.614 while also being very involved in other school activities such as ASB, DECA and SIFF club. Alysssa also volunteers for Relay for Life and Cycle the Wave as well as Rustic Pathways. 

Alyssa is an exemplary scholar athlete.  She is a wonderful representation of Issaquah High School spirit, sportsmanship and dedication. Alyssa has been an amazing asset to the Girls Swim and Dive program for 4 years. Jack Porter ~ Football

Congratulations to Jack Porter, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Football Coach, Buddy Bland, nominated Jack and writes, “Jack is a truly remarkable young man who was one of the most loyal, dependable and committed student athletes on our football team.  He was an excellent role model who demonstrated a teachable spirit, accountability, mental toughness and a team first mentality. Jack played offensive tackle for our varsity football team. He was the starter in many games and the number one backup in others, yet whether backup or starter, his positive demeanor and outstanding effort level never waivered throughout the season..”

Jack is a leader on and off the field.  He gave to the football community as a volunteer for Issaquah Youth Football and the Special Olympics as well as working with DECA and the goodwill truck .  Jack has done all of this while maintaining an estimated 3.2 GPA.

Ryan Barrett ~ Boys Golf

Congratulations to Ryan Barrett, a senior at Issaquah High School.  He has been selected as a Tutta Bella Scholar Athlete by the Issaquah Booster Club and Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria!

Issaquah Golf Coach, Tom Bakamas, nominated Ryan and writes, “Ryan has been on the golf team for 4 years, the last 3 as a varsity player. He was voted most inspirational by his teammates the last 2 years and voted captain by his coach this year. He represented IHS at Kingco and was one of the only two who made it through to Districts. In addition to athletics, Ryan is a top student, maintaining an estimated 3.2 GPA, while taking multiple AP courses.  Ryan is active in the community volunteering at First Tee teaching young golfers the sport. He works at Snoqualmie Ridge Golf course. Ryan also volunteers with the National League of Young Men

Ryan is an exemplary scholar athlete.  His hard work and dedication have made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School. Congratulations, Ryan, and best of luck in the future!
